I've been working with Random house on these sketches for a book, unfortunately the author didn't see this working as the new cover for the paperback edition, so I won't be taking these drawings to the final stages. These are some of the rough pencils - it's a shame I wont get to finish this project off, as I'm sure the final artwork would have made an excellent cover and sold record breaking amounts of books!

'Married Single Other' ITV ad campaign

I spent most of January working on this campaign for ITVs new romantic comedy drama. These are the first two of six hand written sentences, each one a different characters 'relationship status' - the concept being that relationships are never quite as simple as 'Married Single Other'. Although the final posters look like they're quick doodles, I spent ages writing and re-writing (and then rewriting again) the lines until we found the final solutions. I tried every type of pen and paper combination. These pics were taken from todays Metro, but over the next few week posters will be going up around the UK, and the agency (BBH) have even booked a whole tube platform at Oxford Circus ! Look out for them - they're going to be really bold, so hopefully you wont miss them.

These are the "UN-approved & UN-finished" versions of a set of illustrations I made for an Austrian bank. The client preferred a more stripped down and flat colour style using less shading and highlights, but i was very happy with this direction. In the end I had to redo all the colouring, but it seems a waste to not show these versions too. The type hasn't been put in yet at this stage, but I'll post the finals at some point too.

I was asked by Holland Diep to draw a comic strip based on a short passage from any book I loved. I chose this bit from Roald Dahls, 'My uncle Oswald', I was asked some questions about it, incase you cant read the dutch article here are the answers I gave....

I read all of Roald Dahl books when I was a young boy, as everyone does (or should), so i feel a good bond with his stories. I read this book on holiday in spain with a group of friends this summer, and everyone loved it so much. We all thought it would make a great film, and we tried to imagine who would play all the different characters from the book (there's so many !) The story is wonderful, and made me laugh alot, Roald Dahls writing is brilliant and it lends itself so easily to visual media. There were so many scenes to choose from, so i reread it and highlighted bits that i thought would make good visual statements. The first sketches I did were from a scene at the Ambassadors reception, where Oswald is being introduced to all the ambassadors from around the world, i thought it would be good to draw lots of ambassadors, but in the end it didnt have very much narrative and was a bit plain, so i scrapped that idea and looked for something else with more of a story. There's some really funny scenes so it was hard to choose, but in the end I chose the bit when Oswald sneeks down the corridor of his Parisean landlords late at night to their daughters bedroom for some sexy times. This scene didn't really pose a challenge as the sentence structure lends its self so well to comic book format. The dialogue is word for word from the book, and its broken up into short visual sentences with enough scope to draw funny things. I love Roald Dahls dark sense of humour, so maybe there are parallels in that way. I didn't think about Quentin Blakes illustrations when I was doing this project, I mean, the story speaks for itself and could be illustrated by so many different styles. Quentin Blakes drawings are iconic and so linked to Roald Dahls childrens books, so i guess it was nice to take something that Roald Dahl wrote for grown ups.

Début Artists Live At The V&A On Friday 26th June 2009

Chris Price, Craig Ward and myself will be drawing, painting, and collaborating in creating a live artwork at The V&A on the 26th of June 2009.
The event, Pen-Paper-Scissors, is part of their ongoing Friday Late events programme.
The night is devoted to the crossover between Illustration, Graphic Design and Animation in celebration of the V&A Illustration Awards 2009. The key emphasis is on the multi-disciplinary nature of illustration. Hence our involvement.
We will be joined by 3 of the best illustrators from Dutch Uncle, and will be pitting it out for 90 minutes in a live Secret Wars "battle" in the John Madejski garden. The collective artworks will then be judged by 2 appointed judges, both from the V&A, with the additional final vote coming from the all important crowd via a decibel reader. Yep, a decibel reader.
Harry Malt will also be running a drawing workshop in the garden. All artworks created at the workshop will be exhibited on the night, with the best pieces (judged by all the competing artists) being given signed sections of the final Secret Wars artworks. Not sure how many sections will be up for grabs but should be a very cool prize.
Other goings on on the night include, talks with Julie Verhoeven and Graham Rawle. As well as screen-printing workshops, live animation and Peepshow creating a live stop motion film during the course of the evening. It's free to get in, and there are bars running all night so please do come on down.

Finally, a pop-up bar with some credit crunch cred...instead of rip-off prices. Tonight the DoodleBar opens in Battersea, London, with beers for £2.50, and bottles of wine for a tenner. The events café-cum-bar, built through bartering and sourcing furniture from the giveaway website Freecycle, is a low-cost, high-concept sort of place intent on spurring creativity in the community.It will host exhibitions, screenings, classes and workshops throughout the summer. Many will be in collaboration with Onedotzero, the digital arts organisation that provides educational outreach to young children and teenagers. Forthcoming events include monthly film screenings hosted by Vivienne Westwood, and US filmmaker Jamie Johnson giving a free talk and screening of his new movie Sounds Like Teen Spirit. But the DoodleBar, as you might surmise, is also designed to be a haven for - doodlers. The walls, chairs, tables and even waiters are all blank canvasses, waiting for some creative types to come scribble, sketch or plain graffiti them. "The waiters will be wearing white jeans and shirts," says Jules Cocke of filmmakers Squint/Opera, who along with illustrator Serge Seidlitz, came up with the idea for the bar. "You can doodle anywhere you want on their clothes. It's up to the waiters where they draw the line." There's a VW Beetle, a Seventies chaise lounge, a sled and a ping-pong table in need of a little colour. And there's a basic mural of London mapped out and people can add whatever they like – the Thames and Big Ben are already in situ. During the day, the bar will turn into a café, serving salads and sandwiches. There's also free Wi-Fi. "The aim is to make The DoodleBar into a walk-in, constantly evolving work of art, created as a collaboration between all those who visit," says Seidlitz.

When I met Gerald Scarfe at Hay festival I told him that i spent my angst ridden teenage years listening to Pink floyd and looking at his drawings. His formative years were spent bed ridden as he was suffering from chronic asthma, which led him to spend hours drawing and making little sculptures. This is evidence of Malcom Gladwell's Outliers theory that the amount of time spent honing a skill or a craft from an early age is essential in the pursuit of success. Ten thousand hours is the magic number of greatness.

I chose to contact successful illustrator Serge Seidlitz last week, and after a little luck with my e-mails managed to gain his attention. A successful illustrator with a great clients list and available through Debut Art, I thought he would be interesting for gaining a little insight into how the successful get along in the industry.

So, anyway, he was kind enough to reply to my e-mail questionnaire this week and here I have his answers and a little insight into how he works and his path into the profession.

• What was your first commission?
My first actual commission as an illustrator was a portrait of Brian Wilson for Mojo magazine,
I had been working four or five years as a graphic designer/ in-house illustrator at cartoon network before becoming freelance and taking on proper commissions.

• Did it take long for you to find work?
I got a job at Cartoon Network straight out of college which helped in giving me a foundation in the industry.

• How was this achieved?
Portfolio and guidance from tutors.

• You're with Heart agency at the moment, but how did you promote yourself before that?

No I'm not! (He’s with Debut Art. My mistake, I had a cold when I wrote the questions!) I didn't promote myself before I was represented as I was full time in house (see above).

• Does most of your work come from repeat clients?
No, it comes from all sorts of different clients, - some comes from repeat clients.

• You have a very distinct style; do all of your clients expect your work to appear similar? Is this ever limiting for you?
I have enough scope within in my work to play with new ideas and push myself, so it doesn't limit me. It’s important as an illustrator ( I think ) to be ideas based and then everything stems from that, if you limit yourself to style over content you'll just be a passing trend. Most of the time, I think people develop their work as they go, improving and experimenting in order to keep fresh.

• What sort of work forms the bulk of your commissions?
Advertising, editorial, marketing, publishing, online content, a bit of TV.

One of my favourite thing to do when I'm drawing is listen to Adam and Joe on 6music, so i was very pleased to get to work on this project. Mike Maloney studios produced this animation for 6 music based on Blu's incredible live animation graffitti project, I was brought in on the last week to 'redraw' the character about 364 times, animation takes ages!

The rat follows the crumbs into the trap which pulls the cord to strike the match which lights the bunsen burner and boils thes the kettle to steam out the bees which sting the mouse who turns the wheels which flick the switch to turn on the electric knife which cuts the string that fires the crossbow too pop the ballon to drop the weight to launch the rocket to flick the switch to turn on the hair dryer which blows the fan and pulls the string to turn on the tap and fills up the fish bowls which knocks the ball and rolls down the pipes into the frying pan and onto the scales which pulls the lever and sparks the zippo which lights the fuse and starts the train which enters the barrel and ....

I was commissioned last year by Jean Marie from Milou + Dufay in Paris to create this illustration for 'Maison de Presse' , a French chain of book shops. It was used on all the festive branding like book marks, bags , in-store posters and also as print ads. Below are a few details from the illustration as they're quite small.

I worked on this drawing a while back for Shell with the London based ad agency JWT, I only recently saw it in its final layout - the first version I did had more of a nuclear sunset, but i had to make the skyline more 'positive' as the world will be a better place in the future.

After four solid days and fifty thousand doodlers later, its over, I'm exhausted! We had Latin Americas biggest rock band playing us out and now i need a massive rest! Sophie, Shane and Karl from Onedotzero have been amazing, as have all the event management guys, Gonzalez and Peter et al, it's been the best Doodlearth so far and I'm looking forward to coming back to London for Doodelarth meets Onedotzero at the BFI festival in November. Watch this space!

Buenos Aires gets Doodlemania!

They came, they saw, they doodled! Yesterday was insane - thousands of people came through the doodlearth room all day long until there wasn't a blank space left. By five o clock, pens were in short supply, and I had to run to the nearest shop and get what I could, the guy behind the counter thought I was nuts as I tried to explain that I needed 200 pesos worth of pens. After a quick break in the square eating steak, listening to some jazz and watching the tango, it was back to the doodle where my new friend Airel was keeping guard (he's the bearded dude in the Metallica tshirt).

The onedotzero_adventures in motion tour kicks off today with a huge three day festival in buenos aires, argentina, set to be our biggest ever event with over 50,000 people expected!
Taking over the historical centro cultural recoleta are playful interactive installations and exhibitions from international artists quayola, doodlearth, tenori-on, patrick bergeron, area3, corby + baily, and from argentinean artists including gazz, punga visual consorico, dgph, biopus and christian wloch.
